304 stainless steel is a versatile and widely used austenitic stainless steel known for its excellent corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability. . It’s a popular choice for various applications due to its balance of properties and ease of fabrication.

Here’s a breakdown of its key properties:
Mechanical Properties:
    • Strength:

304 stainless steel is relatively strong, with a tensile yield strength ranging from 210 to 1,050 MPa (30,000 to 153,000 psi) depending on the level of cold working. It’s not as hard as some other steels, but it offers a good balance of strength and ductility.

  • Density:

    The density of 304 stainless steel is 7,900 kg/m³ (0.286 lb/cu in).

  • Modulus of Elasticity:

Its modulus of elasticity ranges from 183 to 200 GPa (26.6×10^6 to 29.0×10^6 psi).

  • Ductility:

It has high ductility, meaning it can be easily formed into various shapes through processes like drawing, spinning, and stamping.

Corrosion Resistance:
  • Resistant to many chemicals:

304 stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion from many chemicals, including most oxidizing acids and salt spray.

  • Atmospheric corrosion:

It’s also highly resistant to atmospheric corrosion, making it suitable for outdoor applications.

  • Not ideal for high chloride environments:

While resistant to many chemicals, it’s not the best choice for highly concentrated chloride environments, where 316 stainless steel is preferred.

Other Properties:
  • Non-magnetic:

304 stainless steel is typically non-magnetic in its annealed condition but can become slightly magnetic when cold worked.

  • Weldability:

It is known for its excellent weldability, making it easy to join using various welding methods.

  • Ease of Fabrication:

It can be easily fabricated into complex shapes due to its excellent formability.

  • Hygienic:

It’s easy to clean and maintain, making it suitable for food and beverage processing and other hygienic applications.

Applications:

304 stainless steel is used in a wide range of applications, including:

  • Food processing equipment
  • Kitchen sinks and cookware
  • Sanitary fittings
  • Chemical equipment
  • Brewing and dairy equipment
  • Hospital surgical equipment
  • Automotive trim
  • Architectural applications
  • Heat exchangers
  • Pressure vessels
