AISI 8620 is a low-carbon, medium-strength alloy steel that is known for its strength, hardness and wear resistance. It’s often used in the automotive, aerospace, and defense industries.

Composition:

AISI 8620 is a chromium, molybdenum, and nickel alloy steel
It contains iron, carbon, silicon, manganese, nickel, chromium, sulfur, and phosphorus

Properties: High external and internal strength, Good toughness and core strength, High case toughness, Excellent corrosion resistance, and Machinable with less tool wear.

Applications:

gears, ring gears, shafts, crankshafts, axles, bushings, heavy duty pins, bolting, springs, and hand tools.

Heat treatment:

AISI 8620 is flexible during hardening treatments
It can achieve tensile strengths between 545 MPa and 795 MPa with proper heat treatment
It is often carburized to develop a case-hardened part

Machining:

Machining is done prior to carburizing to within as close a tolerance as possible
Finish machining is limited to grinding after heat treatment and/or carburizing
